Medicine leech-Hirudo Medicinalis
The medicine leech is the most studied leech in its phylum. It is studied because of its multiple suckers, and because of its medicine benefits. The medicine leech has two sucker's, the anterior and posterior sucker's. The posterior sucker acts as a a means of locomotion, meanwhile the anterior sucker is the mouth. The digestive system of the medicine leech, starts at the anterior sucker, and ends with the posterior sucker being the anus. Inside the anterior sucker, there are three jaws within the mouth, which it uses to latch onto its prey. It slowly sucks the blood from its prey, using its pharynx. The prey do not notice the leech sucking the blood away, because of the sliminess of the pharynx. It brings the blood into the crop, where it stores the blood for future digestion. The medicine leech can survive for months with only one "meal". It takes enough out of the body to store for future digestion, and to store in case of starvation.
